Why Satpura Is Entered From Four Different Sides
Satpura Tiger Reserve is spread across the Satpura hills in a way that no other central Indian reserve is, and that geography shapes every trip. Instead of a cluster of gates around one town, Satpura is approached from four separate sides — Madhai in the north through the MPT Bison Gate, Bheemkund in the south-west, the Pachmarhi side for the Panarpani core and Bargondi buffer, and the Tamia side in the south-east through Seethadongri Gate.
Each of those entry points opens only its own set of zones. A permit is issued for a zone, but you physically enter through a gate, so the two have to match. Because the sides sit far apart on the map, the choice is really a choice of where you sleep, not just where you drive in.

Madhai Gate (MPT Bison Gate) — Location, Best For, How to Reach
Location: the northern approach to the reserve, on the Denwa River across from the Madhai lodge belt. The gate opens the Madhai core zone and the adjoining Parsapani buffer, and the crossing to the core side is made by boat.
Best for: first visits, and anyone who wants boat and canoe safaris on the Denwa alongside jeep drives. It is the side with the widest choice of accommodation, so it is also the easiest to plan around.
How to reach: 30 km from Pipariya, 66 km from Itarsi, 80 km from Pachmarhi, 134 km from Bhopal and 148 km from Betul. Pipariya is the practical railhead and Bhopal the nearest airport.
Jamani Dev Buffer: a further buffer zone entered through the same MPT Bison Gate — 40 km from Pipariya and 131 km from Bhopal. It is a buffer zone, not a separate entry gate.
Bheemkund Gate — Location, Best For, How to Reach
Location: the south-western approach, opening the Churna and Mallupura core area — the deep interior of the reserve and a noticeably wilder, less-visited drive.
Best for: repeat visitors and travellers who value solitude and forest quality over convenience. Accommodation on this side is sparse, so it suits people willing to stay basic or drive in from Itarsi or Betul.
How to reach: 59 km from Itarsi, 60 km from Betul, 148 km from Bhopal, 135 km from Pipariya and 182 km from Pachmarhi. Travellers coming up from Betul or Nagpur usually find this the natural side.
Pachmarhi and Tamia Side Entries
Panarpani Core Zone — via Pachmarhi
Panarpani is a core zone reached with pick-up and drop from Pachmarhi rather than from a forest-gate lodge, which makes it the practical option if your base is the hill station. It sits close to Matkuli and the Bargondi belt on the same approach road.
Bargondi Buffer — near Matkuli
The Bargondi buffer lies near Matkuli, on the Pachmarhi approach. Like buffer belts elsewhere in central India, it is a working forest shared with surrounding villages, carries fewer vehicles, and pairs well with a core drive rather than replacing one.
Tamia (Delakheri) Buffer — via Seethadongri Gate
The Tamia side, entered through Seethadongri Gate, is the south-eastern corner of the reserve on the Chhindwara approach — 25 km from Tamia Hills, 28 km from Matkuli and 57 km from Pachmarhi. It is the quietest of the entry points and suits travellers already heading through Tamia or Chhindwara.

Important for planning: the Madhai and Bheemkund sides are roughly 120 km or more apart by road, and they are approached from opposite directions. They are not interchangeable gates for the same booking. Decide which zone you want to safari in first, then book accommodation on that side of the reserve — otherwise every safari morning starts with a long transfer instead of a drive into the forest.
The same logic applies on the Pachmarhi and Tamia sides. Panarpani and Bargondi work from a Pachmarhi base; the Tamia (Delakheri) buffer works from Tamia or the Chhindwara road. Two different sides in one short trip is usually a worse plan than two shifts on one side.

Core Zone vs Buffer Zone at Satpura
Satpura's permits are issued either for a core zone or for a buffer belt, and the two are different kinds of drive rather than better and worse versions of the same thing. The table compares them in general terms; zone-wise rules, quotas and timings are set by the Forest Department and should be confirmed as current before you travel.

Which Gate Should I Choose?
The decision is really about where you will sleep, because Satpura's sides are approached from opposite directions. Work outwards from your accommodation.
- Staying on the Denwa at Madhai, or arriving via Pipariya: MPT Bison Gate — Madhai core and the Parsapani buffer. This is also the only side with boat and canoe safaris, so it is the usual choice for a first visit.
- Arriving from Itarsi, Betul or the Nagpur road: Bheemkund Gate for Churna and Mallupura. Quieter, deeper forest, but accommodation on this side is limited, so check where you will actually stay before you commit.
- Pachmarhi side — staying in the hill station: Panarpani core with pick-up and drop from Pachmarhi, or the Bargondi buffer near Matkuli. Best when the trip is part hill station, part safari.
- Tamia side — travelling through Tamia or Chhindwara: the Tamia (Delakheri) buffer through Seethadongri Gate. The quietest option, and it works only if your stay is on that approach.
What does not work is a Pachmarhi- or Tamia-side stay paired with a Bheemkund permit, or a Madhai stay paired with Churna. Confirm current gate timings, permitted safari types and quota rules with the Forest Department or your operator before travelling, as these change season to season.
