Why Satpura Is Entered From Four Different Sides
Satpura Tiger Reserve is spread across the Satpura hills in a way that no other central Indian reserve is, and that geography shapes every trip. Instead of a cluster of gates around one town, Satpura is approached from four separate sides — Madhai in the north through the MPT Bison Gate, Bheemkund in the south-west, the Pachmarhi side for the Panarpani core and Bargondi buffer, and the Tamia side in the south-east through Seethadongri Gate.
Each of those entry points opens only its own set of zones. A permit is issued for a zone, but you physically enter through a gate, so the two have to match. Because the sides sit far apart on the map, the choice is really a choice of where you sleep, not just where you drive in.

MPT Bison Gate (Madhai) — Madhai Core & Parsapani Buffer
Madhai is the entry most visitors mean when they say they are going to Satpura. The gate opens the Madhai core zone and the adjoining Parsapani buffer, and it is the closest gate to the rail approach — 30 km from Pipariya, 66 km from Itarsi, 80 km from Pachmarhi, 134 km from Bhopal and 148 km from Betul. It is also the side of the reserve where boat and canoe safaris on the Denwa River operate, alongside the usual jeep drives.
Bheemkund Gate — Churna & Mallupura Core
Bheemkund opens the Churna and Mallupura core area, the deep interior of the reserve and a noticeably wilder, less-visited drive. Distances run the other way from Madhai: 59 km from Itarsi, 60 km from Betul, 155 km from Bhopal, 135 km from Pipariya and 182 km from Pachmarhi. Travellers coming up from Betul or Nagpur usually find this the natural side.
Panarpani Core Zone — via Pachmarhi
Panarpani is a core zone reached with pick-up and drop from Pachmarhi rather than from a forest-gate lodge, which makes it the practical option if your base is the hill station. It sits close to Matkuli and the Bargondi belt on the same approach road.
Bargondi Buffer — near Matkuli
The Bargondi buffer lies near Matkuli, on the Pachmarhi approach. Like buffer belts elsewhere in central India, it is a working forest shared with surrounding villages, carries fewer vehicles, and pairs well with a core drive rather than replacing one.
Tamia (Delakheri) Buffer — via Seethadongri Gate
The Tamia side, entered through Seethadongri Gate, is the south-eastern corner of the reserve on the Chhindwara approach — 25 km from Tamia Hills, 28 km from Matkuli and 57 km from Pachmarhi. It is the quietest of the entry points and suits travellers already heading through Tamia or Chhindwara.

Match Your Stay to Your Gate
Important for planning: the Madhai and Bheemkund sides are roughly 120 km or more apart by road, and they are approached from opposite directions. They are not interchangeable gates for the same booking. Decide which zone you want to safari in first, then book accommodation on that side of the reserve — otherwise every safari morning starts with a long transfer instead of a drive into the forest.
The same logic applies on the Pachmarhi and Tamia sides. Panarpani and Bargondi work from a Pachmarhi base; the Tamia (Delakheri) buffer works from Tamia or the Chhindwara road. Two different sides in one short trip is usually a worse plan than two shifts on one side.
