Bor Tiger Reserve at a glance

Tucked away in Maharashtra's Wardha district, Bor Tiger Reserve is one of India's most compact yet rewarding wildlife destinations. Declared a tiger reserve in July 2014 — the 47th in the country — Bor was originally established as a wildlife sanctuary back in 1970. Spread across roughly 138 sq km around the Bor Dam, the reserve's limited area actually works in visitors' favour: sightings, including of the elusive Bengal tiger, tend to happen faster here than in many larger reserves.

About Bor Tiger Reserve

The Bor Dam and its reservoir split the forest into two halves — the western portion falling in Wardha district and the eastern portion in Nagpur district. The landscape is a mix of dry deciduous forest, open grassland, and riverine stretches along the reservoir, giving the reserve a distinct character compared to Central India's larger parks.

Tiger numbers here have grown steadily — from around 12 tigers before 2011 to roughly 15 in recent years, according to Wildlife Institute of India estimates. Alongside tigers, the reserve is home to leopards, Indian gaur (bison), nilgai, chital, sambar, barking deer, sloth bears, wild boar, and wild dogs.

Birdwatchers will find over 160 recorded bird species here, including migratory visitors and several endangered species. Reptile enthusiasts can look out for the Indian cobra, Russell's viper, Indian rock python, and monitor lizard among the 26+ reptile species recorded in the reserve.

Since 2005, the Maharashtra Forest Department has worked alongside the NGO Srushti Paryavaran Mandal on habitat mapping, water conservation, and tiger cub rehabilitation — efforts that have helped Bor become a genuine breeding ground for tigers despite its small size.

Best time to visit Bor Tiger Reserve

The reserve is open through most of the year, with October to June generally considered the safari season. April and May — the peak dry summer months — are often cited as the best window for tiger sightings, as animals gather more predictably around the reservoir and waterholes.

How to reach Bor Tiger Reserve

By Air: The nearest airport is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, about 80 km from the reserve, connected to Mumbai, Pune, and other major Indian cities.

By Rail: Wardha is the nearest railhead, roughly 32–35 km away, with regular connections to Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. Buti Bori railway station (around 50 km) is a secondary option.

By Road: From the Wardha–Nagpur highway (MSH3), turn north at Seloo towards Hingani. From Hingani, it's a short drive to the Bor Dam visitor centre. Hingani bus stand, about 5 km from the sanctuary, has frequent bus connections from Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Akola, Amravati, and Wardha.

Nearby tiger reserves

Bor's location puts it within reach of several other major reserves — useful if you're planning a multi-park Central India wildlife circuit:

  • Pench Tiger Reserve (Maharashtra) — approx. 90 km
  • Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve — approx. 85 km
  • Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary — approx. 75 km
  • Nagzira-Navegaon Tiger Reserve — approx. 125 km

There are ongoing discussions about Bor being merged with Pench Tiger Reserve as a satellite core area, which would significantly expand Pench's total protected area in the future.

Plan your Bor safari with TheForestStay

Bor rewards early planning. With only two gates and a limited number of vehicles allowed each day, the best slots can fill quickly — especially in April and May. We check live permit availability, match your gate to your accommodation, and build your Maharashtra wildlife circuit around Bor, Pench, Tadoba or Nagzira.
