Pench spans two states. The Madhya Pradesh side in Seoni and Chhindwara districts is the more famous half, associated with Kipling's Jungle Book. But the Maharashtra side in Nagpur district offers four core zone gates, noticeably fewer vehicles, and accessibility the MP side cannot match. The practical takeaway: if you are flying into Nagpur with two or three days, the Maharashtra side makes more sense. With four or more days and a wish for buffer zone variety, the MP side is stronger.

Sillari is Pench Maharashtra's principal gate and the most developed on this side. A cluster of resorts has grown up around it, making Sillari the natural base for anyone spending more than a day on the Maharashtra side.
At 65 km from Nagpur, Sillari is comfortably reachable in around 90 minutes.
Closest to Nagpur — 50 km
Chorbahuli is the single closest Pench gate to Nagpur at just 50 kilometres — roughly an hour's drive.
This makes it the only Pench gate where a genuine day trip from Nagpur works comfortably. Depart the city around 4:30 AM, complete a full morning safari, and return by early afternoon. For business travellers with a spare morning, or families arriving on a Nagpur flight, Chorbahuli is the practical choice.
The bridge between states — 10 km from Turiya
Khursapar is the Maharashtra gate nearest to the MP side — just 10 kilometres from Turiya.
Guests staying at Turiya-side resorts in Madhya Pradesh can book a Khursapar safari and experience the Maharashtra forest without relocating or driving for hours. It is the only realistic way to cover both states from a single base.
The Saoner approach — quietest drives
Khubala is accessed from the Saoner side and offers the quietest experience of the four Maharashtra gates.
At 50 km from Nagpur it matches Chorbahuli for accessibility, but sees fewer vehicles — making it appealing for repeat visitors and photographers who prioritise solitude.

Mogarkasa is among India's most active black panther zones, with confirmed melanistic leopard sightings and a safari area opened in June 2024. Sighting probability across the Pench–Mogarkasa landscape is estimated at roughly 50 to 60 percent — exceptional by Indian standards, though it also means many visitors do not see one.
Three days, two reserves, tigers and a realistic black panther chance — without changing accommodation once. Very few operators structure Pench Maharashtra trips this way.
Pench Maharashtra permits are issued by the Maharashtra Forest Department and are separate from Madhya Pradesh side bookings. The two states operate independent systems — a Maharashtra gate cannot be booked alongside an MP gate in a single transaction. Core zone permits are limited per gate per shift. Sillari fills fastest given its resort cluster; Khubala and Chorbahuli typically retain availability closer to travel dates. Original photo identification is mandatory for every visitor. Indian nationals may present Aadhaar, Voter ID, PAN Card or Driving Licence; foreign nationals must carry a passport. The same identification used at booking must be carried during the safari.
Jeep safaris carry up to six passengers with a driver and a trained forest guide. Vehicles and guides are allocated by the forest department and cannot be selected by visitors.
Pench Maharashtra is open from 1 October to 30 June. Core zones close during the monsoon from July to September.
Two safaris operate daily, with timings shifting seasonally in line with sunrise and sunset — summer shifts start earlier, winter shifts later. Morning safaris consistently produce better tiger sightings, particularly during summer when animals move at dawn to avoid the heat.
Pench supports over 285 recorded bird species across both states. The Maharashtra side's water bodies and open meadows attract exceptional birdlife including migratory waterfowl in winter — Malabar pied hornbill, crested serpent eagle, Indian pitta and paradise flycatcher among the regular highlights.
The Maharashtra side shares Pench's characteristic habitat — teak and bamboo forest interspersed with open grassland — creating the sightlines that make Pench sightings often clear and prolonged.
The Pench river flows through the reserve, and the Totladoh reservoir on the state boundary provides substantial water, concentrating wildlife during the dry season. Undulating terrain with low hills and ravines adds habitat variety and creates good leopard country.
