Why Gates and Zones Decide Your Kanha Safari
Kanha Tiger Reserve is one of central India's largest protected forests, and it is not entered as a single park. Safari access is organised through gates, and each gate connects only to a specific set of core and buffer zones. Your permit is issued for a zone, but you physically enter through a gate — so if the two do not match, the booking simply does not work.
This matters more at Kanha than at most Indian reserves because its gates sit far apart. Sarhi gate, for example, is around 70 km from both Khatiya and Mukki, which is not a distance you can cover on the morning of your safari. Choosing the gate first, then the accommodation, saves the most common planning headache.

Core Zones vs Buffer Zones at Kanha
Kanha's four core zones — Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi — form the strictly protected heart of the reserve. Vehicle numbers per shift are capped, and these zones include the famous Kanha maidan meadows where hardground barasingha graze in the open.
The buffer zones — Khatiya, Khapa and Siroja — are working forests shared with surrounding villages. They carry fewer vehicles, permits are usually easier to secure, and tigers and leopards move through them regularly. A common and sensible plan is a core-zone drive on one shift and a buffer-zone drive on another rather than treating buffer as a fallback.
