Core zones offer the most protected, undisturbed forest and traditionally the highest tiger density. Core gate bookings are online only — no spot booking is available.

Moharli Core is Tadoba's most popular and most heavily booked gate, with the widest range of accommodation nearby and one of only two gates offering the 9-seater Cruiser safari. Kolara Core on the northern side is favoured by photographers. Khutwanda Core is a quieter alternative with good tiger movement, while Navegaon, Pangadi and Zari offer the most remote and least crowded core zone experiences.

Three of Tadoba's buffer gates operate differently, and this catches many visitors out. Karwa, Shedegaon and Chora are genuine Tadoba buffer zones with regular safari operations — but their permits are not available on the online booking portal. These three gates accept offline booking only, arranged directly at the gate or through the local forest office.

This is not a limitation — it is an opportunity. Because these gates do not appear in the online system, they remain almost unknown to the general tourist. Vehicle pressure is minimal, and guests who secure a permit often find the forest largely to themselves. Availability is confirmed on the day, subject to vehicle quota, so arriving early significantly improves your chances.

Plan travel dates carefully around these closures. Tadoba operates two safari shifts daily — morning and evening — with exact timings shifting through the season following sunrise and sunset. Last entry is permitted up to two hours from the scheduled safari start time. Morning safaris consistently produce better tiger sightings than evening drives, particularly in summer when animals move at dawn to avoid the heat.

Summer (March – June) — best for sightings

Unquestionably the best window for tiger sightings. As waterholes shrink, animals concentrate around remaining lakes and vegetation thins dramatically. Temperatures can exceed 42°C in May, but early morning and evening safaris remain manageable.

Winter (November – February) — most comfortable

Pleasant temperatures, comfortable safari conditions and excellent birdlife make winter the most enjoyable season for general wildlife viewing and family trips.

Monsoon (July – September) — buffer zones only

Tadoba's greatest advantage. Core zones close but buffer zones remain open, making Tadoba one of very few Indian tiger reserves where a monsoon safari is possible. The forest is spectacularly green, crowds minimal, and buffer sightings surprisingly good.
