Sillari vs Khursapar — Which Pench Maharashtra Gate Should You Choose?

On the Maharashtra side of Pench Tiger Reserve, two gates dominate traveller shortlists: Sillari, the principal and best-developed entry point, and Khursapar, the quieter gate that sits remarkably close to the Madhya Pradesh side. They are only 29 km apart, and both open into genuine core-zone forest — so the decision rarely comes down to habitat quality. It comes down to where you are staying, how much company you want on the track, and whether this is your first Pench safari or your fourth.

The headline difference is access. Sillari is the shorter drive from Nagpur and has the accommodation, roads and infrastructure that come with being the main gate. Khursapar trades a little convenience for a quieter forest and, crucially, sits within a ten-minute drive of the busiest MP-side resort belt.

First-time visitors — Sillari

If this is your first Pench safari, Sillari is the safer pick. The gate is easy to reach from Nagpur, permits and jeeps are readily available, guides here handle first-timers every day, and there is a real choice of places to stay within a short drive. Higher vehicle numbers also mean more radio chatter about recent movement, which genuinely helps when you only have one or two drives.

Repeat visitors — Khursapar

If you have already done Sillari or Turiya and want the forest to feel emptier, Khursapar is the better second visit. Fewer gypsies per sighting means longer, calmer time at a tiger encounter and better photography conditions without a queue of vehicles behind you. Photographers and people travelling midweek get the most out of it.

This is the single most useful fact in this comparison. Most Pench visitors stay near Turiya on the Madhya Pradesh side, because that is where the largest concentration of resorts sits. Khursapar Gate is only 10 km from Turiya — closer than several MP gates from the same base. Karmajhiri, by contrast, is 72 km away.

That means you can do a Turiya Core safari in Madhya Pradesh in the morning and a Khursapar Core safari in Maharashtra in the evening, from the same hotel bed, with no transfer drama. Two states, two forest management systems, two distinct safari experiences, one stay. The only catch is that the permits come from two separate government portals, so they have to be arranged in parallel rather than in one transaction.

Sillari, at 40 km from Turiya, is doable as a day trip from the MP side but far less comfortable for an early-morning slot.
