Khatiya vs Mukki — Which Kanha Gate Should You Choose?

Kanha's two most-used gates do not unlock the same zones. Here's how to choose the right entry point before you book.

Why the Gate Choice Matters at Kanha

Kanha Tiger Reserve's two most-used gates — Khatiya and Mukki — don't give access to the same zones. This single detail causes more booking confusion at Kanha than at almost any other Indian reserve, and getting it wrong can mean arriving at the wrong gate for the zone you actually wanted.

For the complete picture of all three Kanha gates, every core and buffer zone, and full distances from Jabalpur and Raipur, read our complete Kanha Tiger Reserve guide. This article focuses only on the Khatiya vs Mukki decision.

The headline difference is zone access, not quality. Both gates reach genuine core-zone forest. Khatiya simply reaches one more core zone — Sarhi — and that zone is only accessible from Khatiya or Sarhi gate itself.

Khatiya Gate — Maximum Flexibility

Khatiya is the only gate that opens into all four of Kanha's core zones — Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi — plus the Khatiya buffer zone. That makes it the safest default for visitors who are not yet sure which zone's permits will be available on their dates.

Best for: First-time visitors, anyone wanting maximum flexibility if their preferred zone's permits are sold out, and specifically anyone who wants Sarhi zone access.

Mukki Gate — Southern Access, Missing One Zone

Mukki Gate accesses three of the four core zones — Kanha, Kisli and Mukki — plus the Khapa buffer zone. It does not connect to Sarhi Core.

Best for: Travellers arriving from Nagpur or Raipur, given its southern position — but only if Sarhi isn't your priority zone.

The Mistake to Avoid

The most common Kanha booking error is choosing Mukki gate while hoping to visit Sarhi zone later in the trip. It's not possible — Sarhi is only reachable through Khatiya or Sarhi gate itself, which sits 70 km from both Khatiya and Mukki.

If Sarhi is on your must-visit list, confirm your gate before you book accommodation. Many resorts near Mukki are excellent, but they cannot fix a zone-access mismatch.

Quick Decision Guide

  • Want every option open: Khatiya.
  • Arriving from Nagpur/Raipur, don't need Sarhi: Mukki.
  • Specifically want Sarhi's quieter, remote zone: Khatiya or Sarhi gate only — never Mukki.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Sarhi zone from Mukki gate?+

No. Mukki gate does not connect to Sarhi Core. You must enter through Khatiya gate or Sarhi gate.

Which gate should a first-time Kanha visitor choose?+

Khatiya, since it's the only gate offering all four core zones — the safest choice if you're unsure which zone will have permits available.

Is Mukki gate worse than Khatiya?+

Not worse — just more limited. Mukki is genuinely convenient for southern approaches and still covers three of four core zones.
